This design has been in my sketchbook for a long time and when I created the DILLY SUN HAT I knew the Petal would have to come next.
A reversible flower sun hat for the little blooms in your life.
This design will blow your mind with cuteness. 12 petals surrounding the center brim and a chance to choose 2 or more petal colours.
The project has a fairly easy construction but the sheer number of petals in the brim makes this more complex than my basic KIDS REVERSIBLE or the DILLY.
But have no fear this project comes with PDF SEWING PATTERN and instructions to download, a full tutorial on the BLOG and a Video tutorial on my YouTube channel
Get the PDF print at home sewing pattern HERE and find the kit list and full tutorial below
For this project you're going to need the following materials and kit:
MATERIALS
- 2 Fabrics - I recommend a medium to lightweight cotton
- Fabric 1 for the caps (center of the flower)
- Fabric 2 for the brims (petals)
- Medium to heavy weight interfacing
- Matching or contrasting threads
KIT
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Pins/Clips
- The seam allowances are small in this project to avoid bulky seams so I like to use a 1/4" guide foot. It's not crucial just a handy tool.
Gather all your gear and let's go...

STEP 1 - Making the cap
CUT OUT Cap segments Fabric 1 x 6 Fabric 2 x6
SEW segments RST (right sides together)
SEW 3 segments together first
STEP 2 - Making the brim
STEP 3 - Stiffening the brim
STEP 4 - Joining cap and brim
CIP or PIN your Brim to Cap RST
SEW brim and cap together carefully matching cap segment seams every 2 petals (for exact technique see tutorial video chapter 4)
STEP 5 - REPEAT
REPEAT steps 1-4 to make a second hat but DO NOT INTERFACE the second hat!
STEP 6 - Join 2 hats
JOIN 2 hats RST matching petal seams
SEW outer brim edge leaving a 3" gap to turn through
TURN your hat through the gap you left, be patient this can be fiddly
PRESS both sides and roll seams out to get nice petal curves
STEP 7 - Close the gap
STITCH the gap closed, ladder stitch is my favourite stitch for this
STEP 8 - Topstitch
TOPSTITCH all around outer brim edge with a long stitch approx 2mm from the edge
STEP 9 - Finished
DO A HAPPY DANCE YOU ARE DONE!
Now make more and create a flower garden for all the littles you know
