Bring Summer to the table with these flower petal place mats! Perfect for picnics and parties with a floral theme or just because you love flowers, like me!

Inspired by my Kids petal sun hat this pattern had to happen. 12 petals, a sweet center and backed with any colour you like.
The PDF pattern available HERE makes a flower with a 14" diameter when finished and is perfect to peek out under a standard dinner plate. However I envisage the pattern being reduced and enlarge for all manner of uses and I myself might try to make some garden mats (watch this space).
Below is a step by step sewing tutorial on hot to sew these Petal Place Mats with top tips and extra photos.
Here's what you'll need:
- Light/medium weight cotton fabric in 3 colours (2 for the front and 1 for the back)
- Medium wadding/batting to quilt
- Matching or contrasting threads for top stitching
STEP 1
CUT out all your pattern pieces using my PDF TEMPLATES
STEP 2
JOIN 12 petals RST (right sides together) to form a ring and press all seams open.
Check that the flower lays flat at this point before your proceed. If not adjust some of your seam allowances accordingly to make it lay flat.
STEP 3
SEW your inner center circle into your petal ring RST by using notches shown on the template to ease the circle into the ring slow and steady.

Using the notches helps you know whether you are on track for the pieces to fit together before you go too far. Because you are working with a circle the fabric will stretch a little in places and not at all in others, so go carefully.
STEP 4
Once you have a flower, ADD wadding/batting to the back (wrong side) of your flower ready for the next step.

STEP 5
QUILT the wadding/batting to your flower by sewing (stitch in the ditch) into the petal seams.

Also make any top stitch detail you want now because the messy reverse will be hidden by the backing later.
TRIM excess batting to the scalloped edge before proceeding.
STEP 6
JOIN 2 back pieces RST along center back seam, leaving a gap indicated by a notch on the template.
This gap will allow you to turn the whole thing right side out later.
STEP 7
LAY quilted flower face down onto the top side of your back pieces and SEW along the scalloped edge using a 0.5cm seam allowance.
STEP 8
TRIM excess fabric from the outer edge
STEP 9
TURN your flower mat right side out and PRESS PRESS PRESS.
Roll edges out and manipulate your flower into shape.
STEP 10
HAND sew the gap in the back closed

STEP 11
TOPSTITCH outer flower edge 2mm from the edge

FINALLY make an abundance more and you have a flower garden for your table!

If you are wanting to resize this pattern to make coasters and all manner of other mats, please take my advice and resize the templates WITHOUT seam allowance. These templates work accurately together and any slight discrepancy in the sizing will result in the center circle not fitting into the petals.
